Ukraine says a new military push is underway

From Business Insider

Ukraine says its forces have launched a major military offensive against Russian positions in multiple directions in the country's southern region on Monday, possibly signaling the start of a long-anticipated counteroffensive.

A US defense official supported the idea that a counteroffensive appears to be underway in remarks to the New York Times, noting that Ukraine seems to have an "appetite for progress on the battlefield," but the official added that the Pentagon questions whether or not Ukraine can make substantial gains.

Two US officials told CNN earlier on Monday that Ukraine had been "shaping" operations to prepare for a counteroffensive, while the country's former president Petro Poroshenko said it was underway.

Monday's reports potentially signal the start of Ukraine's long-awaited counteroffensive along the war's southern front near Kherson.
Ukraine has been telegraphing such a move for months, but it hasn't materialized.

Inspectors on way to nuclear plant at center of radiation disaster fears

International inspectors were heading Monday to the  nuclear plant at the center of growing alarm about a potential radiation disaster.

“The day has come,” Rafael Grossi, the head of the U.N.'s International Atomic Energy Agency, said in a tweet early Monday.

The mission — which will be led by Grossi — will assess physical damage to the plant, determine how well its safety systems are functioning, evaluate working conditions for its staff and perform any urgent safeguard activities, the IAEA said in a separate tweet.

Mikhail Ulyanov, the Russian envoy to international organizations in Vienna, confirmed to Russian state news agency Ria on Monday that the mission has set off for Zaporizhzhia, adding that Moscow has made "a significant contribution to the preparation of this mission."

The mission consists of about 15 people, Ulyanov told the news agency, and some of its members will stay behind at the plant on a permanent basis.

'Don't tell us Ukrainian is our native language. In Donbass, it never has been'. LPR Representative Rodion Miroshnik explains at the Donbass peace talks why Donbass people didn't support Ukrainian nationalist politics.

According to Miroshnik, about 90% of the Russian-speaking population in Eastern Ukraine didn't support Maidan and didn't want to join the European Union. Watch his interview where he discusses the reasons why the people of Donbass didn't support official Kiev politics.

Sanctions War Not Going As Well As Planned - The Economist

Harsh sanctions imposed on Russia by the West over the conflict in Ukraine have so far been unable to deliver the desired result, The Economist magazine has acknowledged, adding that the strategy has “flaws.”

“Russia’s GDP will shrink by 6% in 2022, reckons the IMF, much less than the 15% drop many expected in March... Energy sales will generate a current-account surplus of $265 billion this year, the world’s second-largest after China,” the outlet reported.

At the same time, the energy crisis, which has been provoked by the sanctions war, “may trigger a recession” in Europe, where gas prices spiked by another 20% this week, according to the British magazine. This all means that the expected “knockout blow from restricting Russia] has not materialized,” The Economist said.

2022-08-26 20:51:36 The whole world is with… Russia?

The latest UN vote on Russia's military operation in Ukraine shows growing support for Russia and the increasing isolation of the West. The sentiment has changed drastically since early March.

On 25 August, a UN resolution to condemn Russia's aggression against Ukraine received support from only 54 countries. This is less than one-third of the total number of UN members (193). And the support level is dramatically lower compared to 141 countries that voted for a similar resolution on 2 March.

The actual list of the 54 countries voting against Russia is also quite telling:
- Unsurprisingly, supporting the anti-Russian resolution were the US, Canada, the UK, EU members, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea. Also worth mentioning here is Turkey, whose vote was driven by its own geopolitical interests in the region.
- The G20 vote was split 50/50. In other words, half of the world’s largest economies, including China and India, supported Russia. On the other hand, the list of the 54 voters for the anti-Russian resolution is full of tiny countries, whose economies are insignificant and whose dependence on the US is too strong (North Macedonia, Albania, San Marino and Federated States of Micronesia, to name a few).
- Out of ten ASEAN members, the only one supporting the resolution was Singapore, and all the 8 members of SAARC sided with Russia.
- The only Latin American countries voting with the US against Russia were Colombia and Guatemala.
- Among the 55 countries of the African Union and the 22 countries of the Arab League, not a single one voted to condemn Russia’s military operation.

This means that Russia is winning the fight for people’s hearts and minds across the globe. Why does Russia have so many friends these days?

Firstly, the world’s political leaders aren’t blind. Unlike ordinary people in some countries, who remain misled by propaganda in the Western mass media, the leaders are fully aware of the West’s role in protracting the war. They are also clear on the barbaric methods of warfare used by the Kiev regime.

Secondly, and even more importantly, a growing number of countries support Russia in its efforts to counter the unipolar world order. This order serves the interests of a handful of Western countries at the expense of the rest of the world, and that’s probably why today many countries wish Russia a success in its fight against Western hegemony, happening now in Ukraine.
