Why can't we change our minds when confronted with contradictory evidence? Well probably because of FEAR, we think that it's too expensive to do away with our beliefs. I'm not attempting to reduce our general reluctance to "fear" alone because there are more than one reason one of which is confirmation bias. It is quite healthy to maintain a flexible position on certain issues than being dogmatic, one can however make serious case for the problem of "belief flexibility" but one can't also deny the necessity of open mindedness especially at the expense of uncertainty.
Dogmatism is unhealthy to the individual perpetuating it and the society in which he exist in, I'll argue that the fear sterming from the reluctance to changing our beliefs is a consequence of dogmatic thinking-- the fixed adherence to principles a priori rather than a sufficient analysis of the evidence.
Remember when you googled something and you swiped 7 links down just to click on the one that proves your point ? Ok guess we're all biased here!?
The best way to counter dogmatic thinking is adopting an evidence based doctrinal system, following where ever the evidence leads.
